Madeira: the ocean at your door, Fanal forest and the island's peaks
Seven nights by the ocean in Funchal, a jeep along the north coast and a sunrise ridge hike — all arranged.
Your base is the 5★ Meliá Madeira Mare in the Lido district: ocean-facing, with direct access to the seafront promenade and the pebble beach of Gorgulho a hundred metres away. Half board takes care of breakfasts and dinners — and after a day out, the hotel's pools, spa, sauna and hammam are waiting.
From the airport, a private transfer: I meet you with a sign in the arrivals hall and get you to the hotel door in about half an hour. The same in reverse for your flight home.
One day goes to the north of the island by 4x4: the misty laurel forest of Fanal with its fairy-tale trees, the coastal villages and the natural pools of Porto Moniz. The tour can be shared or private — just for your group, at your own pace and stops.
And one day to the heights: the PR1 trail from Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo, Madeira's highest point. We set off early, while it's cool and the clouds sit below, along a ridge above the ocean.
